At the SPLICE IN festival dedicated to the theme of "Gender and Society in Cinema", historical and present-day documentary and feature films were screened, many of them as premières. Starting with Afghanistan, SPLICE IN presented local initiatives of filmmakers, actresses and women's organisations, in part going back to the 1960s. In their cinematographic and political work, they develop methods and possibilities to undermine the strict gender norms of Afghan society. They are currently working in a social environment characterised by the influence of international funders and attempts at intimidation by local conservative groups.
The presented cinematographic and political practices were supplemented by films on local political strategies used in the neighbouring countries Iran and India as well as in Europe, and discussions took place with guests from Afghanistan, India, Iran, Germany, and the Unites States. The project SPLICE IN was a cooperation with filmmakers and activists from Berlin and Kabul.
